Fun and Engaging Thanksgiving Math Activities

1. Subtraction- Write the Room

Thanksgiving Math Activities

This Thanksgiving math activity was so much fun for my students and would get them up and moving around the room!

Simply print and place cards around the classroom and have students walk around with a clip board to find the math problems. Have students record them on their subtraction recording sheet. Students love hunting for the math problems and this is a great way for them to practice these facts and improve their math fluency in a fun way!

I have used this as a whole group activity and have used it as a math center that students rotate to and they absolutely loved it! This activity also works great as an at home learning activity and parents can easily place the cards around the house for children to find!

2. Subtraction- Color by the Code

Color by the code activities are always a hit! This activity was the perfect way to fit in subtraction practice with this fun turkey theme!

My students always loved these activities and revealing what the picture comes out looking like.

I liked to put these on the back of worksheets or have them out for my early finishers. They are also a great way for them to get in a little extra practice with their math facts!

3. Addition- Roll and Solve

Thanksgiving math activities for first grade

This Thanksgiving math activity can be used as a fun and engaging way to practice addition math facts individually or in pairs as a game.

If students play individually they can roll the dice and then solve the equation of their choice from that row and color in the square. My students always liked to make a prediction of what row they thought would fill up first.

Students can also play in pairs where they use two different colored crayons and take turns to roll the dice and answer an equation from a square in that row. After answering, students color in the square in their color. Their goal is to try to be the first one to answer a whole row of equations either horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

Either way you play will lead to engagement, a little competition and a fun way to practice math facts!

4. Turkey Fact Families

Thanksgiving math activities for 2nd grade

This Thanksgiving math activity will create the perfect math center, small group game or activity for early finishers. Laminating the sheets or placing them into a sheet protector before use will give the ability to use dry erase markers to practice again and again!

First, students each get a turkey page to place in front of them. Next, students will put the fact family turkey cards in a pile. Lay the cards face down and take turns drawing one card at a time. Students can place their card inside the square or on their turkey page. Next, have students create their fact family number sentences with the numbers on the card. When students are finished they can erase their number sentences from their turkey feathers and pick a new card to practice again!

I have also included a recording sheet so they can practice writing them with pencil as well. With this recording sheet, you can have students turn in the sheet for accountability and to check understanding.

I highly suggest printing these activities on cardstock or laminating them for extra durability and for use year after year!
