Reading and Writing Activities,  Reading Practice

Let’s Read and Write all Year!

Reading and writing are two essential skills that children can continuously work on to improve and grow. As a first grade teacher, I was always looking for fun and engaging ways to make my students excited to practice reading and writing. I was constantly on the hunt for activities I could do with them that would be engaging, exciting and fun to keep their interest learning while also having fun! I found these themed reading and writing activities to be exactly what I was looking for. *This post may contain affiliate links

In these fully editable and engaging activities, children walk around the room searching for the words they are working on. With each activity, simply just choose your own words to fill in, print the cards, hang them around the classroom or home and give your kiddos a copy of the recording sheet! Children will have so much fun searching for the words and will get great practice reading and writing them. On the recording sheet there is a space to write a sentence using their words and then a small spot to draw a picture to match when finished writing the words around the room. My students always loved being able to write a sentence and draw the matching picture when they were finished! (It’s great for those early finishers and for extra bonus fun!)

These Write the Room activities make for great practice in a classroom or can be a fun assignment for parents to do along with their kiddos at home. Children gain extra practice with words they may be struggling to read and write and this activity allows them to be up moving around the room while having fun at the same time! After the kiddos have found all the words around the room and have had time to write in the sentences, a bit of sharing and review is critical to success. Time spent going over each of the words and sharing the sentences that the children made is so beneficial. Checking the words and sentences helps to ensure they spelled the words correctly and are using them the right way within the sentences.

For some added fun give children colorful clipboards to walk around the room with! My kiddos always loved attaching their paper to the clipboards so they felt more like official detectives hunting for the words!

My students absolutely loved using these activities each month and when they would see the new theme with cute pictures on each card they would get so excited. I loved knowing that not only were these activities fun for them to do but they were great practice to help them improve their reading and writing skills!
